Loctite Threadlocker Types and Uses

Loctite offers several types of Threadlockers, each tailored for specific applications, fastener sizes, and strength requirements:

Low-Strength (Blue):

  • Uses: Ideal for smaller fasteners such as screws and Loctite 222 bolts (typically under 1/4 inch or 6mm), allowing for easy disassembly with hand tools.
  • Applications: Commonly used in automotive and machinery where regular maintenance or disassembly is necessary.

Medium-Strength (Purple):

  • Uses: Offers a balance between strength and removability, suitable for a broader range of fastener sizes.
  • Applications: Found in assemblies that require periodic maintenance, such as pumps, gearboxes, and small engines.

High-Strength (Red):

  • Uses: Engineered for permanent locking, providing maximum resistance to vibration and requiring heat and hand tools for removal.
  • Applications: Used in critical assemblies where security against loosening is paramount, such as in heavy machinery, construction equipment, or structural components.

Surface Preparation:

Regardless of the type, proper surface preparation is crucial for optimal performance:

  • Clean the threads with a suitable solvent to remove oil, grease, or contaminants.
  • Dry the threads thoroughly before applying the Threadlocker.

Application Guidelines:

  1. Precise Application: Apply a small amount of Threadlocker to the male threads, ensuring coverage without excess.
  2. Assembly and Torque: Assemble the components and tighten to the recommended torque specifications.
  3. Curing Time: Allow sufficient curing time before subjecting the assembly to load or stress as per manufacturer guidelines.

Safety Measures:

  • Ventilation: Work in well-ventilated areas due to fumes emitted during curing.
  • Protective Gear: Wear gloves to avoid direct skin contact with the adhesive.
  • Storage: Store containers tightly sealed and at recommended temperatures for longevity.


  • Low/Medium-Strength: Can usually be disassembled using standard hand tools.
  • High-Strength: Requires heating the assembly to around 500Β°F (260Β°C) to aid in disassembly along with hand tools.

Choosing the right Loctite Threadlocker type ensures the reliability and security of threaded assemblies, maintaining stability, and minimizing the risk of loosening in various applications across industries.
